Media in support of good governance in Ukraine: the best media materials awarded

2 December 2022

The Council of Europe within the Programme “Enhancing decentralisation and public administration reform in Ukraine”, implemented by the Centre of Expertise for Good Governance continues supporting the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine (Minregion) in raising awareness of population about best practices of municipal management and good governance in a time of war.

On 1 December 2022 an annual cycle of the Ukrainian National Media Contest on public administration was completed and its Award Ceremony took place.

The 12 best media materials from regional media (printed, online, radio, and TV) were awarded by the Ministry and the Council of Europe. Informational support to the Contest was provided by the NGO Internews Ukraine. In 2022 the number of the Contest’s applicants is the largest in its entire history.  “The war demonstrates that the good democratic governance is now more important than ever in Ukraine and beyond. And free media is the one of the preconditions for creation of the lasting strong democracy and good governance worldwide”, – emphasized Mr Steen Nørlov, Head of Office, Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe on the coordination of cooperation programmes of the Council of Europe with his welcome remarks to the winners. More information is available in Ukrainian.

The Council of Europe initiated the Contest according to its BPP – Best Practice in Local Government Programme in 2016. As a follow up to the positive results of the first contest, starting from 2017 the Minregion became a main organiser of the Contest. Since then, it is organised on an annual basis with the Council of Europe’s support within its project on decentralisation.
